In Uganda\u2019s rich historical archives, one woman fits this description perfectly, yet remains oddly under-discussed when it comes to her intellect: Princess Elizabeth Christobel Edith Bagaaya Akiiki of the Tooro Kingdom.For reasons that remain unclear, conversations about Princess Bagaya tend to focus solely on her beauty or royal status, rarely touching on the depth of her intelligence and the impact of her achievements. So let\u2019s set the record straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Trailblazer by Every Definition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Princess Bagaya is a Cambridge University alumna\u2014the first East African woman to be called to the English Bar and practice law in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a time when African royalty was expected to shun glamour, she became a fashion icon\u2014gracing the covers of major European magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She served as Uganda\u2019s Foreign Minister under Idi Amin, representing the country at global conferences and tirelessly working to restore its damaged reputation abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Kingdoms were abolished, she returned to Uganda with hope for Tooro\u2019s restoration, only to be denied by Amin. However, recognizing her potential, he made her an Ambassador-at-Large, a role akin to a global Foreign Affairs envoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though her term as Foreign Minister lasted only from February to November 1974, it was impactful. She flew across the world, defending Uganda and encouraging diplomatic relations\u2014acting not just as a representative of the Amin regime but as a patriot committed to her nation\u2019s image and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Behind the Nickname \u2018Dada\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many people mistakenly believe \u201cDada\u201d was Idi Amin\u2019s real name\u2014it wasn\u2019t. The nickname was coined by his army peers while he served in Kenya. Amin had a reputation as a serial womanizer, often spotted with beautiful women whom he casually introduced as \u201cUyu ni dada wangu\u201d (Swahili for \u201cthis is my sister\u201d). His friends later caught on that these were actually his lovers, and the nickname \u201cDada\u201d stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That reputation would follow him all the way to the presidency\u2014and intersect painfully with Bagaya\u2019s story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Amin\u2019s Obsession and the Fallout<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During her time in government, Amin reportedly developed romantic feelings for Princess Bagaya. When she resisted his persistent advances, he retaliated in a brutal and public fashion. He announced her dismissal on national radio, accusing her of sleeping with a white man at an Italian airport\u2014a completely baseless and humiliating claim.Devastated by the slander, Princess Bagaya fled to Britain. She eventually married her fianc\u00e9, Prince Wilberforce Nyabongo, in 1981 during the second Obote regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A New Chapter and Later Years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1984, Bagaya took a brief detour into film, appearing as a shaman in the Columbia Pictures movie Sheena: Queen of the Jungle. After the fall of Tito Okello in 1986, she was appointed Uganda\u2019s Ambassador to the United States under the NRM government.Sadly, her marriage was short-lived; Prince Nyabongo passed away in 1988. Following his death, Princess Bagaya chose to step back from public office. She dedicated herself to charity work and took on a deeply personal role\u2014becoming guardian to her brother\u2019s son, Rukidi IV, who has been Tooro\u2019s reigning monarch since 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lesson for Men: Learning to Lose Like a King<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most striking lessons from Princess Bagaya\u2019s story\u2014especially for men\u2014is this: learn how to handle rejection. It\u2019s a life skill, not a personality flaw. Idi Amin\u2019s inability to take \u201cno\u201d with dignity cost him the loyalty and service of one of the most brilliant women Uganda has ever produced.Men, learn to accept rejection without chaos. Stay calm. Lose like a king. Walk away, gather yourself, and return to the drawing board. Rejection doesn\u2019t diminish your value unless you let it.
