{"id":376,"date":"2026-07-22T10:33:35","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T10:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chroniclesofanauditor.com\/?p=376"},"modified":"2026-07-22T10:33:36","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T10:33:36","slug":"the-birth-of-ugandas-first-indigenous-commercial-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chroniclesofanauditor.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/22\/the-birth-of-ugandas-first-indigenous-commercial-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"The Birth of Uganda&#8217;s First Indigenous Commercial Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few people know that the creation of the Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB) was driven by a critical gap in Uganda&#8217;s financial system during the late 1950s and early 1960s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, the country&#8217;s only indigenous banking institution was the Uganda Credit and Savings Bank (UCSB), established in 1950 by the government. While UCSB played an important role in mobilizing savings and providing mortgage facilities mainly through cooperative societies. it had limited capacity to meet the growing financial needs of Ugandan farmers, entrepreneurs, and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expatriate banks operating in Uganda largely focused on short-term financing for imports, exports, agriculture, and industry. Many indigenous Ugandans found it difficult to access adequate credit facilities, particularly long-term financing that could support business growth and economic transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, commercial banking in Uganda had been pioneered by National and Grindlays Bank, which was appointed banker to the Uganda government in 1913. By then, branches had already been established in Kampala and Jinja, strengthening the bank&#8217;s position in Uganda and across East Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recognizing the need for a truly national commercial bank, the government announced plans in February 1965 to establish a state-owned institution that would provide comprehensive banking services to Ugandans across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On 9 October 1965 the third anniversary of Uganda&#8217;s independence the Uganda Commercial Bank was officially launched by Prime Minister Apollo Milton Obote. The bank was established as a fully government-owned institution with a mission to expand access to commercial banking services nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its first MD was Joseph Mubiru, who would later become the first Governor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/bank-of-uganda\/\">Bank of Uganda<\/a>.
