Your Personal development is greater than career development.

One thing I deeply miss about my corporate life was taking annual leave not for a vacation but to travel to schools in Butaleja and Mbale to offer career guidance to students.

People often ask why I did it.

The answer is simple.

There is a satisfaction that comes from a student walking up to you months—or even years—later and saying, “That conversation changed how I think about my future.” That feeling? It’s World Cup levels of joy.

Ironically, my career break has only multiplied those opportunities and over the past months, I’ve had the privilege of engaging students across different schools, and what continues to humble me are the testimonials that keep finding their way back to me from the S1 student I spoke to while in their P6.

Sometimes it’s a learner who says they chose to stay in school because of a conversation we had.

Other times it’s a student who still remembers a lesson from two years ago.
Those moments remind me that impact has a longer shelf life than we often imagine.

Titles expire.Jobs change.Business cards become obsolete.But words of encouragement spoken into a young person’s life can echo for years.

Perhaps that’s why I keep and kept showing up. Because somewhere in a classroom sits a future CEO, judge, engineer, teacher, poet, or President who simply needs one person to believe in them. And if I can be that person for even one student…

Then every kilometre travelled has been worth it.

The feeling you get from impacting other people lives is more fulfilling than a delayed promotion that your working on in the background.
